Blackhouse Self Catering Accommodation, Isle of Harris

August 2, 2008

Increasingly, over the last decade or so, there has been an increase in the quality of self catering accommodation on the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides, which are also known as the Western Isles, of Scotland. Most noticeable are the numerous properties which are available for self catering which have rather unique design aspects. One such property is the blackhouse at Borvemor, Scarista, South Harris.

A blackhouse was the typical house inhabited by the majority of Hebrideans until the last century and the building at Borvemor was built using the traditional methods except that the interior is fitted with all the mod cons you would expect to find in good quality self catering accommodation.

Looking rather like a stone built, thatch, cottage the blackhouse has a unique charm and a timeless quality which appeals to many. For this reason it is often difficult to book so, if you want to book the blackhouse please contact the owners using the information provided at the end of this article. The cottage looks most spectacular during one of the amazing Hebridean sunsets which seem to appear with incredible regularity during the tourist season. However it is equally beautiful with a light dusting of snow but the Outer Hebrides rarely have snow for more than an hour due to the salt air and the effects of the gulf stream.

The Isle of Harris is well known for its astounding beauty and most folk visiting are aware of the many stunning beaches but one of the hidden beauties of the Blackhouse at Borvemor is that after a very short walk, to the end of the croft on which it sits, you come upon a most beautiful and, almost, private beach. At times this beach is a real sun trap and even in the roughest of weather the sea and surrounding countryside look incredible.

Another reason why the blackhouse is incredibly popular with tourists visiting Harris is that the accommodation is all on the same level. Although not equipped for the disabled the advantages of ground floor accommodation are rather obvious.

Inside the blackhouse it decorated in a typical Hebridean style with the walls being lined with wood paneling. In the living room is a lovely solid fuel burner which keeps the whole building cosy but adds that something special to the experience. With a double bedroom and additional sleeping in the living room the blackhouse is perfect for couples and couples with a child. However with other self catering accommodation close by it is also suitable for group bookings though there may be some disagreement as to who gets the chance to stay in the blackhouse as against the other properties (though these too are superb and include a house and two cottages).
